Hypothesis
Based on our background research, our hypothesis is that we will get better quality plants using artificial light.
Research
The University of Maryland Extension says “Generally, sunlight is best for plant growth but artificial lighting can improve the quality of light plants receive, improving plant growth.”
Variables
Independent variables - type of light
Dependant variables - growth of plants, amount of leaves
Controls - type/amount of soil, type/amount of seeds, water
Procedure
We got 2 cups for each type of light, then we put soil into the cups. After that we put the seeds evenly spaced in the cups, and proceeded to cover them with soil. Then we put two on a window sill, and the other two under artificial light. We watered it every second day.
Observations
Day |
Plant Update |
10 |
Both artificial and natural had just sprouted out of the soil but artificial was higher out of the soil than natural. |
15 |
Both plants had fully sprouted but while natural had just two leaves artificial had 4. |
20 |
Natural hadn’t grown very much more while artificial had grown to about a quarter bigger than natural |
25 |
Natural hadn’t grown that much while artificial had grown a significant amount |
30 |
Natural had not grown very much, artificial was meanwhile double the size of the natural plants. |
Analysis
Due to the increased amount of growth shown by the artificial light plant, we can assume that artificial light is better for the plants.
Conclusion
In conclusion, our experiment showed that artificial light was better for our plants. The plants that grew under the artificial sunlight proved to be healthy, stable, and grew larger (in general).
