Change that stain
Grade 6
Presentation
Hypothesis
We hypothesis that the home products will clean better as well as impact the environment less. We believe that because our parents use the homemade natural products and they clean our house very well. These natural products are in genraly beter wehen conparing cost and saftey.
Research
Phosphates are a part of water pollution and pollution, Due to improper disposal of these helpful and harmful cleaning products. Even though phosphates are harmful to our environment we understand that cleaning products are helpful but we just have to remember to reduce our usage of these products and dispose of them correctly. Scientists are working on a replacement for phosphates. Our water use of phosphates in cleaning products impacts our sea dwellers greatly. Phosphates can cause algae to overgrow which will cause a phenomenon known as eutrophication. Overall we know that phosphates cause real harm to the environment. Canada has already banned phosphates due to their negative environmental impacts.
Our research has shown that natural cleaners contain far less harmful toxins for the environment, animals and humans. This means that any natural cleaners entering the water, will not harm the environment.
both of are unnatural products are harmful to comsume so based on our research we will be using masks to not inhale chemicals and gloves to prove skin irritation
Variables
Controlled | Manipulated | responding |
1. Surface that is stained (plexiglass and carpet) 2. Amount of time we're cleaning it 3. The kind of stain we are cleaning |
The type of cleaning product | 1.All worked well but Windex, Resolve and,Vinegar worked best |
Procedure
1. To begin with our procedure we will start by coating the plexiglass or carpets with a thin layer of paint
2. The time is decided depending on the surface we are applying on if it is plexi glass it will be 20 minutes on the carpet it will be 15 minutes
3. After letting it set we will apply the cleaner if it is applied on plexi glass we will scrub it for 1 minute on the carpet we will scrub for 5 minutes
4. To finish off we will analyze the leftover residue
Observations
Carpet: Plexiglass
1. Lemon: made the paint harder to see 1. Lemon: It was harder to scrub the paint off but came off after 30 seconds
and discoloured the carpet
2. Resolve: Did well in some spots and 2. Windex: The paint was quick and easy to come off
returned the carpet to its original colour
3. Vinegar: would have worked better if 3. Vinegar: it had the same results as windex
it had more vinegar on it and scrubbed for longer
Analysis
Glass Cleaner:

We found that Windex and Resolve were effective cleaners but had very harsh environment impacts and used chemicals that can damage our bodies. We also found that Resolve was specifically a spot cleaner. When we sprayed the Resolve and proceeded to rub the carpet, we found that the Resolve did not spread and only cleaned the spots it was sprayed on.
Vinegar was effective to clean both windows (plexiglass) and carpet and has no negative environmental impacts.
Lemon Juice did not work effectively as a cleaner and also did not have any negative impacts on the environment.
Conclusion
When we tested the plexiglass Windex and Vinger had the best result. All the products on the plexiglass looked the same, but it took longer for the lemon to wipe off.
The carpet was not as fast as plexiglass but had a similar result. Resolve and vinegar had the same results but we suggest vinegar because it is more natural and safe. Lemon worked well but discoloured the carpet. Resolve worked well too in some parts but others were mildly affected.
In conclusion, vinegar did the best overall by being more natural and clean as well as or even better than products you buy in the store.
Application
We want to care for our environment and the waste that comes from cleaning products can affect it health greatly. So we're trying to see if we can reduce the amot of environmental affects from them and replace it with other less harmful cleaning options.
Sources Of Error
Project | Testing |
1. We could not find out how changing a smell would help people |
1. The timing was off because the computer turned off and stopped timing the expirament |
2. Phosphates were banded in Canada so we had to alter our project | 3. washed the plixie glass for too long |
4 We had red carpet on red paint so we changed the paint coulor to blue
