Hot and cold water

We crush and expand a can with different temperatures of water.
Grade 5

Hypothesis

Our hypothesis  is that when we put the crushed pepsi can in the hot water the pepsi can will expand.

Research

Why the experiment turned out this way was that the water molecules move closer to each other when it is cold, and they move farther from each other when it is hot. So, in our first experiment, when there was hot water inside the can and cold water in the bowl, the water molecules moved closer together, and that is why the can crushed. In our second experiment, we had cold water in the can and hot water in the bowl. So, when it was hot, the water molecules moved away from each other. So, that is how the can expanded.

Variables

Instead of pouring hot water in the can and cold water in the bowl, we poured cold water in the can and hot water in the bowl.

Procedure

First,  pour cold water with a small ice cube inside a aluminium can. Then, put duct taped the top of the can.Next,  pour normal tempature water in a pot and boil it. After that, place the can with a tounge in the pot then it will expand slightly in a few minutes.

Observations

Our observation was that the can only expanded form two diffenent sides. Another observation was that the can crushed quickly in the first experiment, but it expanded slowly in he second one.

Analysis

We didn't have to do any math.

Conclusion

In our first expiriment the normal can with hot water inside crushed when we put it in the cold water. In the second expiriment the crushed can with cold water inside expanded when we put in the hot water.

Application

We use them in cooking, manufacturing, wearing perfume, the weather, and many others.

Sources Of Error

In our first expiriment we accidentilly put the can in to early before it was hot. Then we tried again annd it worked. Another error was that we did not put the ductape on propelly so we had to replace it with another peice of ductape and then the expiriment worked.
