How avalanche strategies have changed over time
Grade 5
Presentation
Problem
How avalanche strategies have changed throughout 100 years, 1900s vs present day.
Method
We will use information and videos to learn what present day avalanche detection and prevention is. We will compare this to what was used in 1910.
Research
we used kiddle we sureival persenteseges learned 92% if found within 15 minutes of the avalanche 30% if found within 35 minutes of avalanche (victims die of suffocation) nearly zero percent after two hours.
these are the Avalanche type's Slab avalanches, Powder snow avalanches, Wet snow avalanches and Avalanche pathway
most Avalanche's start when most snow storms hit it blows around the snow on the top of the montains and makes the snow on the bottom unstable and when more snowstorms happen it just can't help the snow on top anymore and it gives up and then I avalanch starts in 1910 there were less avalenches due to there wes not many back contry skiiers now in the 2024 we do lots of back contry skiing so avalanches are most likly to happen but back then they did not bomb anything but the avalanches were deadly now adays there are barly any avalanches un controlled because we bomb them with helicopters and plains and many more
A slab avalanche is formed frequently in snow that has been deposited or redeposited by wind. They have the characteristic appearance of a block of snow cut out from its surroundings by fractures.
A powder avalanche is The largest avalanches form turbulent suspension currents known as powder snow avalanches or mixed avalanches.
A wet snow avalanche is In contrast to powder snow avalanches wet snow avalanches are a low suspension of snow and water.
A avalanche pathway is an avalanche that moves down a slope, it follows a certain pathway that is dependent on the slope's degree of steepness and the volume of snow/ice involved in the mass movement.
Data
we learned that there is more then just one type of avalanche there are
- Slab avalanches
- Powder snow avalanches
- Wet snow avalanches
- Avalanche pathway
we talked more about it in reaserch
we did not know there was more then 1 type of avalanche it was supprising when we looked it up well we did not look it up we just started reading
Conclusion
we found out that we could not protect things or people from avalanches back in the 1910 but they did not happen offten but when they did oh my it was bad. These days we use stratageis to help not have un-controlled avalanches we use
- bombing
- we can use a gun kind a thing
Citations
we used kiddle the most it taught us so much
my sister Danelle (Emily's sister) did the avalanche sign and its amazing
domaineskiable/Twitter/Reuters took the pictures in Project image
