Food Shortages

We want to find out why so many people of the world are starving. Many parts of the world are impacted by world hunger.
Grade 7

Problem

Many people are struggling with food insecurity. For example people in South Sudan are struggling because they spent most of their money towards the civil war and indepedence against Sudan. Not just civil wars but women and men are not always treated equally, Yemen doesn't let women eat before the men sit down and eat even though some of the women cooked the meal. Sometimes women don't get to eat at all or very little because men think that they work all day in the sun and women don't so they are not as hungry as the men do after working outside all day long. Vietnam is a country where parts of it are stable and other parts are not. In the countryside Vietnam's people must recceive help from the government because they don't have much recception from the city electrical poles but in the big city Vietnam thrives as they a have a lot of resouces from income they make having well paid jobs as compared to the coutryside workers who don't have much income and the government doesn't come around too often to but their produce. Food shortages are bad but how can we can help.

Method

Ways people are trying to help with food shortages.

Solution: Gene editing technology to make lettuce less susceptible to environment

Technology: CRISPR technology(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat)  can now been used for the applying of plant science to gene function and also protein, these things can be worked in drought tolerance and more crops. This is important because plant diseases can be caused viruses, bacteria, and fungi

Results: Lettuce can grow even in a drought.

1. Organize
Check what's in stock in your house
2. Make a shopping list but do not write down what you already have that will be a waste of money. That is where the check what's in stock in your house comes into play.
3.Buy what is fresh or what is in season.
never buy what you already have and only buy what you need. These items may include fruits and vegetables.
 4. Take the time to organize your produce.
This will increase the rate of the well being of fruits and vegetables.
5. Measure your portions.
Don't worry about leftovers, measure enough for yourself and that's it.
Then your fridge would not be full of food.
6. Freeze your produce if it ever wilts, do not compost it.
There is still lots of nutrition in those foods cook what you can,and freeze it but do not make a mistake lots of people make. Don't group them in big batches instead group they in small bundles of food.
7. Only get out what you need for the meal and dinners over.

Bread can last for 3 months in the freezer.
Chicken can last for 9 months.
Lots of vegetables can be frozen for 8 months.

Don't stress over leftovers, instead measure out carefully what you will eat. It is also a good idea to cook the perfect amount of food so that you can freeze it. For example it is lunch and you need to eat something so you can just take out what you need for lunch from the freezer and after that lunch is done do not over cook or eat more than your measurement. This can help by reducing your left overs so your fridge is not crowded and the food will not go to waste.

Research

The world food programme has dug into many coutries food shortages I personally use it a lot because it covers information about places severely suffer with food shortages because they personally send help to struggling countries. The amount of food waste has rapidly increased due to covid 19 and the amount of expenses for health care. Since the pandemic ended, many people have been in debt due to surgeries and expensive health care. Many people can find it difficult to keep the lights on as they lost their job since the covid 19 stroke. Since the independence of South Sudan, South Sudan was highly in debt so the government couldn't afford food anymore for the people of South Sudan. Thousands of people especially women with small children. They stand there while others upack the sacks of food for the thousands of people waiting in line for food. Why only women and children because women are not respected as they are not allowed to eat before the men of the family sits down and eats often leftover scraps are considered a meal to the women and children. In vietnam big cities are most likely to have more money, food, water, and supplies. Whereas rural areas such as farmlands are likely to not be able to eat anything for any meal wherever whenever let alone have electricity to run basic things such as water, wifi, lights and transportation. Financial difficulties make it hard for families who work on farms to afford food and resources. In situations like these the government will step in and help the families. Women and Men may not always be treated equally. In Yemen Women are not given the right to do many things such as not being able to eat before men do, not only this but also that out of the 17 million people that live in Yemen 29 million people in Yemen are homeless thats 71%-78% of the population in Yemen, that is more than have of the population. Businesses often struggle without customers then after that they either end up in so much debt that they can't pay anymore or they end up homeless. Sudanese people fled from Sudan to Chad to stay out of the Sudanese war. Sudanese and Chadians face the same problem, food insecurity. If not for the help of World Food Programme, the Sudanese either have little or no food at all. The World Food Programme is one of the biggest donors for East Chad.Niger is a landlocked country in the Sahel region, with around 80 percent of the population living in rural areas. However, land degradation and limited access to arable land and water are key drivers of food insecurity. Climate change is further increasing the challenges, with increasingly irregular rainfall, rising temperatures, desertification, and more droughts and floods. The World Food Programme (WFP) has been present in Niger since 1968, working to alleviate hunger and malnutrition during emergencies and build communities’ resilience against shocks in partnership with other UN agencies. The global humanitarian funding crunch has forced WFP to end the food assistance programme, which had served Syrian families nationwide for over a decade.
Despite this, WFP will continue other programmes including school meals, nutrition, livelihoods and early recovery. WFP will also respond to emergencies across the country, through smaller and more targeted emergency response.
Syria remains among the ten countries with the highest number of hungry people globally. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that 12.9 million Syrians – more than half the population – are in the grip of hunger in 2024. Another 2.6 million are at risk of becoming food insecure.
The protracted conflict, in conjunction with record levels of inflation, a weakened domestic food system and continued sporadic shocks such as the disastrous earthquakes in February 2023, have exacerbated the brutal socioeconomic conditions.
While humanitarian aid remains vital, it is insufficient to meet the country’s increasing needs. Long-standing issues such as widespread destruction, collapse of national safety nets and shortage of resources require urgent attention and interventions that can prevent a worsening of the situation. This is especially vital as humanitarian assistance is reduced.

Syrian refugees are begging people for food in Iraq because of the civil. Young children and their families evacuate Syria and flee for Iraq to find shelter and food but it's not enough for Syrians half deaths happen in children because of starvation. In Yemen the dowry used for their daughters husband is kept to keep to raise the family and feed the children and family. Steps:
When to plant your crops are the most important thing about planting crops
when your soil is ready and the season is ready make sure you plant in time do not drag on because the later you plant the less time you will have to make sure you soil is good.
Planting ahead of the schedule also gives you an advantage to approval of good soil conditions
Make sure to have your water to be properly drained.
It is super important to have the right amount of water and you don't over add the amount of water.
It is also important to drain your water because if the plant gets too much water, it could result in dying plants and which can stop your plant from growing.
Seeds must be a good quality
Good quality seeds are important because if you have damaged seeds for example, they won't grow as well.
Weeding often and when your plant is young.
Weeds often cut into your plants and destroy your crops which could make your crops die and you would not have food.
Make use of fertilizers
Fertilizers

Nearly 9 million people in parts of Bangladesh (24 percent of the analysed population) experienced high levels of acute food insecurity, classified in IPC Phase 3 and 4 between March and April 2023 (harvest season). An estimated 7.9 million people are in IPC Phase 3, Crisis and nearly 1 million people are in IPC Phase 4, Emergency. High inflation, coupled with reduced incomes and repeated climatic shocks are putting extreme stress on the poorest households and driving acute food insecurity in the analysed population. Urgent action is required to protect their livelihoods and reduce food consumption gaps. A majority of the analysed districts have been prone to shocks and previously classified between moderate-to-severe levels of chronic food insecurity (IPC Bangladesh Chronic Food Insecurity Situation 2019-2024 report).
The situation is projected to deteriorate between May and September 2023 due to extreme weather events such as cyclones and flooding. The number of people in Phase 3 or higher is likely to increase to 11.9 million in this period – an 8 percent increase from the current period. Over 2 million people are projected to be in IPC Phase 4, Emergency between May and September 2023 with a majority of these people being forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals. It is likely that household access to food will further deteriorate in this period due to the slow recovery from shocks that occurred in 2022 – severe flooding and prolonged exposure to high food prices – as well as a lean season.
The influx of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) will continue to increase due to the reduction in humanitarian assistance in March 2023 and funding shortfalls in the projected period.

The situation at the southern border reflects the “unprecedented increase in migrant populations in Central America and Mexico,” as warned by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) this week.
This month, Tapachula has witnessed thousands of migrants stampeding to secure an asylum appointment at Comar, demonstrations at the offices of the National Migration Institute (INM), and undocumented individuals sleeping on the streets.
Dani Rorube, a migrant from Cuba, said they are unhappy about the lack of transit documents, so they plan to form a caravan to leave Tapachula.
The “Todo Por Ellos” shelter receives around 6,000 migrants monthly, while the “Belén” shelter, located at the city’s entrance, houses about 500 migrants, exceeding its usual capacity threefold.
Gerber Bermúdez, the administrator of the Jesus el Buen Pastor shelter, mentioned that they are running low on food.
This shelter typically caters to an average of 1,500 migrants, including around 400 children, in addition to hundreds of people sleeping outside the shelter because there is no longer room to accommodate them.

This can help by reducing your left overs so your fridge is not crowded and the food will not go to waste. 1.

Websites show that you can study your crops better by understanding how to yield successfully.
These facts may help you learn your crops better.

Fertilizers

Solution: Gene editing technology to make lettuce less susceptible to environment

Technology: CRISPR technology(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat)  can now been used for the applying of plant science to gene function and also protein, these things can be worked in drought tolerance and more crops. This is important because plant diseases can be caused viruses, bacteria, and fungi

Results: Lettuce can grow even in a drought.

The World Food Programme is one of the biggest donors for East Chad.

Niger is a landlocked country in the Sahel region, with around 80 percent of the population living in rural areas.
