Many Calgarians do not know what rocks and minerals are found locally in southern Alberta. The purpose of my research is to show what rocks are natural in southern Alberta and what chemical elements they contain.

This research will involve tests 100% based on simple factors such as mineral color, streak, lustre, hardness and more.

I collected rocks from nearby (Either the WDP Schoolyard or my backyard) or from a test kit (To show common minerals).

Based on observations I decided what category of rock it was.

Then I noted the color and grain size.
I tried to get a streak by rubbing it on a streak tile. A streak is powder from the rock falling off (Most did not have streaks).

I then figured out what rock it was by looking in a book and then what elements it had.

Some rocks made me have to evaluate more details like hardness.

Research

The majority of the rocks I assessed contained oxygen. Additionally many rocks I found were igneous, so they have been manually brought to Calgary as they are not situ here. There were two marine origin rocks which may have been from when the Calgary area was underwater.

Igneous and metamorphic rocks are not situ in Calgary so either they came here from natural causes (Like being carried down a river) or were manually brought by humans.
