Lava Lamp

I will be doing research on lava lamps and will be answering questions I have about them with research

Problem

Main question: Why does the Lava lamp create bubbles when I put the Alka-Seltzer tablet in the Lava lamp

- What the science behind a homemade Lava Lamp

- Why doesn't oil and water mix

- Why does the color drops move to the water area on the bottom of the glass so slowly?

Method

for this research project, to get the information i used:

- Kiddle

- Make a homemade lava lamp, Bubbling Blob Lava Lamp. (Youtube vidoes)

- Academic Kids

- Home science tools

- Lava Lamp in a bottle Lava Lamp in

- Why oil ans water do not mix

- Fun science for kids

Research

1) Why does the Lava lamp create bubbles when I put the Alka-Seltzer tablet in the Lava lamp?

Alka Seltzer tablet reacts with the water not with oil, this creates a disturbance in the water, which will create the bubbles. Since the bubble got disturbed they will start to move around and not stay still. The bubble will be floating up because of the Oxygen they are holding, and soon they will reach upward where the oil is.

2) What the science behind a homemade Lava Lamp?

When you put the Alka Seltzer table in the Lava Lamp and let it sit for few seconds, you will notice that it started to break down, and those little bits of the tablet are sticking to the water droplets which creates CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) gas bubbles.

3) Why doesn't oil and water mix?

There is two reasons for this, the first one is because of different density, water is denser (heavier) and oil is lighter. Second reason is because oil molecules attract other oil molecules, same goes with water molecules. if they attract themselves only then how can they mix when there are not even attracting each other.

4) Why does the color drops move to the water area on the bottom of the glass so slowly?

Water and food coloring are both polar molecules, so they will mix since they are BOTH polar molecules. That's why the water blobs turn to the color blue, and etc, and oil doesn't. when the guess bubbles pop, there is nothing holding those colorful water droplets and so it slowly goes back to the ground.

Data

I am doing a research project, so I have no data on this.

Conclusion

I learnt :

- Why water and oil don't mix

     - if you put water first and then oil in a glass, there won't be any movement because water is denser than oil, so even if you did oil first and then water the water would have sinked to the bottom of the homemade Lava Lamp.

- why does the Lava Lamp make bubbles when i put the Alka-Seltzer tablet in

- how come the color drops move to the water area so slowley
