Meteor Impacts on Different surfaces

Hypothesis
Our hypothesis is sand surfaces will have more destruction (deeper walls) and if the meteor is larger the impact will male a bigger in diameter rim.
Research
- Impact craters happen when objects (asteroids and meteorites) crash into larger objects like earth.
- Craters are circular because the material makes contact flies in all directions
- The moon has many visible craters that have lasted millions of years because it has no atmosphere, and elements like earth has (rain and wind)
- Definition: occurs when a rock (iron) or icy body orbits the sun passes through the atmosphere to hit the earth.
Variables
Manipulated Variables
Different surfaces:
-soil
-sand
-mud
Controlled Variables
‘Meteor’ 10 nickels
‘Meteor’ Iron (argentina)
Meteor - argentina
(real example)
Procedure
-
We will just create a flat surface with sand in a container. Then, we will drop the ‘meteor’ on the surface from the height of the kitchen ceiling then measure the impact size ,depth, diameter and then take photos and videos for later observation then repeat on other surfaces (dirt, mud)
Observations
We first tested Iron (Argentina), by dropping them from our ceiling height (63 inches).
Contact on sand:
When the Iron made contact with the sand, it made a 3 inch impact crater in diameter. The rim was 1 inch deep, All 3 trials were very close in the result of the contact with the sand surface.
Contact on dirt:
When the Iron made contact with the dirt, it made a 4 inch impact crater in diameter. The rim was very little, it made 1 inch rim in height.
All 3 trials were very close in the result of the contact with the dirt surface.
Contact on mud:
When the iron made contact with the mud, it made a 4 inch impact crater In diameter. The rim was very little, it made 1 inch rim in height.
All 3 trials were very close in the result of the contact with the mud surface.
Analysis
Conclusion
The impact our meteor (10 quarters) made on each surface was very little result in creating a outer rim and crest.
THe impact our real iron meteor made a larger crest and rim compared to the 10 quarters by an inch to 2 inches.
Application
The information I learned from these experiments is the speed of the meteors when it breaks through the atmosphere is vast. They travel at the speed of 71 km per second.
